Staying Active with Scoliosis

I’ve worked with many amazing young people who are navigating life with scoliosis. If you're wearing a back brace, I want you to know: staying active is not only possible—it’s highly encouraged!
Movement helps keep your muscles strong, improves posture, and can even reduce discomfort. Whether you love dance, soccer, or just taking walks with friends, activity is a great way to boost both your physical and mental health. You may need to modify some activities or take short breaks, but a brace shouldn't stop you from enjoying the things you love.
Worried about how you’ll look or what people might say? You’re not alone. Many teens feel nervous about the social side of bracing, especially in gym class or while trying on clothes. My advice? Start with a small, trusted group—share your experience if you feel comfortable. Our Scoliosis Peer Program is a great way to connect with other teens who have seen it all and can help you navigate your way through the ups and downs. Confidence grows when you're active, engaged, and surrounded by support.
And here's something a lot of my patients love: you can customize your brace to reflect your personal style! From colorful patterns and glittery finishes to cool decals and favorite themes, your brace can become more than just medical equipment—it can be you. When teens help design their brace, they often feel more confident wearing it, and even proud to show it off.
Don’t forget: your brace is doing important work to help your spine grow straighter and stronger. But you’re more than your diagnosis. Keep moving, keep smiling, and don’t be afraid to ask your orthotist or doctor for activity-friendly tips. We’re here to help you stay strong, feel great, and live your fullest life—brace and all!
