How Prosthetic Alignment Affects Comfort and Mobility

A comfortable, functional prosthesis is about more than the socket or components, it’s also about alignment. Proper alignment helps your prosthesis work with your body instead of against it.
Alignment refers to how the prosthetic components are positioned in relation to one another and to your body. Even small adjustments can influence how weight is distributed, how your prosthetic foot contacts the ground, and how efficiently your body moves.
When alignment is off, you may notice discomfort, pressure in certain areas, uneven walking, or increased fatigue. Over time, poor alignment can also contribute to muscle or joint strain. On the other hand, well-tuned alignment can improve stability, reduce unnecessary pressure, and make walking feel smoother and more natural.
One important thing to remember is that alignment isn’t a one-time event. Your body, activity level, residual limb, footwear, and even changes in strength or weight can affect your alignment and change how your prosthesis feels. That’s why regular follow-up appointments are so important.
