Getting Back in the Game: A Guide to Sports After Amputation

It’s always inspiring to see how resilient and determined people are when they set their minds to returning to activities they love. Whether you’re a runner, a dancer, or someone who simply enjoys a weekend hobby, the road back to activity is navigable with the right mindset, tools, and support network.

Each sport has its own demands, and thankfully, today’s prosthetics are up to the challenge. For cyclists, there are aerodynamic legs with pedal clips and rotation adapters. Swimmers can use waterproof limbs or even flipper-like feet. Runners thrive with springy running blades. Golfers benefit from flexible ankle joints for smoother swings, while hunters and fishers rely on locking knees and rugged gear built for the outdoors. Yoga and skiing call for specialized low-profile or shock-absorbing limbs that allow more flexibility and control.

Just as important as equipment is preparation. I always recommend starting slow—walk before you run, literally! Stationary biking, core work, balance drills, and resistance training all play vital roles. For each sport, there are targeted exercises: rotational work for golf, agility training for skiing, and fine motor practice for fishing or shooting.

And, even in individual sports, teamwork is key. Discuss your goals with your care team and we can build a plan of care that can help you reach them. And that gives your body the time it will need to adapt. With support, training, patience and a positive outlook, you can return not

only to sport, but to your best self.

If you’re ready to get back out there, let’s talk. Your journey starts now, and we're here to help.
