Finding Strength Together: The Power of Support for Amputees

April is Amputee Awareness Month—a time to recognize the resilience of those living with limb loss and to highlight the resources that make a real difference in their journeys. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible individuals who show strength and determination every day. One thing I’ve consistently seen that helps patients thrive? The support they receive beyond direct medical care.

Losing a limb is a major life change, and while we focus a lot on physical recovery and prosthetic solutions, other types of support are just as important. That can be support groups that offer a safe space to share experiences, ask questions, swap tips about prosthetic care, talk through challenges, celebrate small victories and connect with others who truly get it.

But it can also be advocacy and political action groups that work on behalf of amputees. Organizations like the Amputee Coalition provide resources to help amputees navigate their new world, while groups like So Every BODY Can Move and efforts like the Prosthetic Parity movement work at the legislative level to guarantee access to the medical care and technology amputees need (in fact, Maine was one of the first states to enact legislation requiring insurance carriers to provide coverage for prosthetic devices).

These groups remind amputees that they’re not alone. And the level of confidence and connection they foster simply can't be overestimated. If you're newly navigating limb loss—or even years into your journey—I encourage you to explore these and other groups like our very own Peer Program. Local hospitals and clinics can often provide some direction as well.

This month, let’s spread awareness, yes—but also compassion, connection, and hope. Because healing is more than just physical. It’s about knowing someone’s got your back every step of the way.
