AtlanticProCare is performing a KAFO Club Foot project funded by the National Science Foundation!

AtlanticProCare is currently performing a research project that has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). AtlanticProCare has developed a Dynamic Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (DKAFO) for the treatment of Metatarsus Adductus/Varus (MTA), Internal Tibial Torsion (ITT) or Talipes Equinovarus (TEV) (Clubfoot). The DKAFO offers an innovative solution to a common problem that will improve the quality of life for children in terms of effective treatment and compliance, while defraying the overall treatment costs. The National Science Foundation is supporting this project, and we are currently fitting the brace on selected infants as part of the Phase I research.

To date, the research has demonstrated high acceptance levels and promising success, with a 98% success rate.

The DKAFO offering is an easy-to-use brace that combines the manipulation aspects of physical therapy and casting, the positioning of serial casting and the compliance benefits of thermoplastic bracing. Current conservative treatments are often problematic in terms of compliance and efficacy, often resulting in corrective surgery. Existing braces do not provide necessary physical manipulation and are often resented by the child and the family. Without the parents and child’s compliance, bracing is not an effective treatment. Serial casting is effective and often indicated, but severely immobilizes the lower extremities of an ever-active infant. Surgical interventions often lead to distortion of appropriate biomechanical alignment and impair full function later in the patient’s life. The DKAFO is a low-cost, effective, conservative treatment for a widely prevalent condition that can largely affect an individual’s long-term mobility. The DKAFO addresses the shortcomings of current conservative treatments and provides an elegant treatment option for both care provider and patient.

AtlanticProCare will now be hosting a message board to provide open discussion for prosthetic and orthotic-related subjects!

This message board will be a great chance for individuals from all over the internet to discuss issues, ideas, or just good stories with other people with similar interests or experiences. AtlanticProCare will host two message boards: One for people that use prosthetics and wish to share prosthetic experiences and ideas, and one for people who use Orthotics, specifically Spinal Orthotics.

This will be a trial run with the message boards, please use them courteously and respectfully. If the trial run is successful, we will be changing the format of the message boards. AtlanticProCare reserves the right to delete or remove any offensive material and we will make every effort to do so, within a reasonable time frame, if we feel such action is necessary. Always striving for better ways to provide care for you, we've just implemented a new system for quickly developing foot orthoses (or inserts) in a single visit. Normally, at the initial consultation an impression of your foot is taken for use in creating a plaster model. The model is then modified, a series of heat moldable foams are vacuum formed over the model and the insert is ground down to its final shape. This labor intensive process typically required two separate visits a week or more apart. With the new system, for some people we will be able to incorporate all of this work into a single visit that shouldn't require more than an hour or an hour and a half total. There will be a 20-30 minute break in the middle of the exam when the patient can go up to the Resource Center to relax and browse among the reading materials available or check out our website on our high speed internet access.

AtlanticProCare is also proud to announce a new program to improve our services regarding diabetic footwear: we now stock a FULL inventory of extra-depth shoes. At all times, we have a complete stock of diabetic footwear in-house, including sizes 4.5 (W) to 13 EEE (M) in a variety of colors and styles. What this means to you is that there is no wait for a pair of diabetic shoes. If you see us for the care of your feet and a pair of diabetic shoes, you will probably walk out of AtlanticProCare with your shoes on the same day as your appointment. No longer do you have to wait for “order time” or other slow-downs. Your carefully-selected shoes will be made as custom as you need them to be, with a specially designed multi-layer biomechanical foam insert that will provide cushioning from pain and protection for your feet.

With the implementation of the quick-fit foot orthotics complimented by our new full inventory of extra-depth footwear, AtlanticProCare can provide you with prompt, customized care, and your road to relief will be as smooth as possible!
