Innovative Upper Extremity Technology

Bionic is here!  AtlanticProCare is proud to be a New England Regional Clinical provider of the Touch Bionics I-Limb Hand©.  This is the first ever articulating bionic powered hand with multiple grip patterns simulating the range and function of the human hand and we're bringing it to Maine for our patients.  Check out the astonishing array of functions, from holding a cup of coffee by its handle to popping the tab on a soda can--click on the picture below to see a great video!

The upper hand shown here is an I-Limb hand with a high definition cosmetic cover--unbelievably realistic!  Click on the image to see it in use.

This hand provides unprecedented dexterity and function making all sorts of daily tasks easy to perform.

Coupled with life like covers the result is an amazing step forward for upper extremity amputees.

Which  one is her prosthetic hand?

What about the cost?  Alot of people assume that this kind of technology is out of reach because of cost.  While it is expensive, our specialists are experts at working with your insurance company to get you the coverage you need to enable you to restore this type of function in your daily life and give you terrific confidence in your appearance! Give us a call to talk about it.

Partial Hand solutions.  In cases where only a partial hand is needed, this same company has developed ProDigits©.   Using the technology of the I-Limb hand but for individual fingers Touch Bionics has also pioneered myo-electrically controlled, fully articulating digits that can be custom built to restore an entire hand to full functioning.  Sound interesting? A cool low-tech solution...   Here is a fascinating innovation that is low-tech but very effective: the X-finger was developed by a dentist originally and can restore function for people missing one or more fingers. No batteries are required, the power is provided by the natural movement of the hand but allows the user to grip and hold normally with fully articulating digits.  Shown here with the mechanism exposed, the X-finger comes with a natural looking glove that provides a natural looking hand when worn.

Super responsiveness!   Myo-electrics is the ability to use the signals created by gently flexing the muscles in your arm to control an artificial hand.  Here's a peak at a the SensorSpeed© hand by Ottobock that is so responsive that it can be used to catch a frisbee out of the air click here for the details.

Fascinating socket design options.  Typically, sockets used for upper extremity amputees are simple enclosures that the residual limb rests in.  The problem is that to hold the prosthesis on, additional straps must be worn that suspend the weight of the prosthesis from the shoulder.  When some one is moving about there is poor control of the prosthesis and often it is difficult to lift any significant weight. Our cutting edge solution is the state-of-the-art technique known as the Trans-Radial Anatomical Contour (TRAC) concept for socket design.  This provides a socket that is intimately contoured to your limb and that suspends the weight of your arm from the skeleton of the arm.  Not only is it comfortable and secure but it allows you to do so much more and with fewer straps!
