AtlanticProCare's patient-controlled suspension system to be introduced at New England Rehab Hospital October 5, 2009 Amputees must constantly deal with the fact that the size of their limb changes thorough out the day. As the limb changes, the fit of the limb in the socket also changes. This alters the way the bodies weight is distributed over the limb resulting in discomfort and more critically, causing skin breakdown. Ulcerations increase the risk of infection and typically result in periods of time where the prosthesis can't be worn at all. Patients must learn to stop, take off the limb, add "socks" over the limb then re-don their prosthesis and test the new fit. It is a cumbersome and inexact process that is often unsuccessful at maintaining a safe fit. AtlanticProCare has developed a unique system that uses pneumatic bladders placed at key locations inside the socket to allow the fit to be adjusted whenever the patient wishes.
Used for several years by the patient's of AtlanticProCare, this system is now being introduced at the New England Rehab Hospital. As staff become familiar with this beneficial approach, we expect that many more people will be able to take advantage of this light-weight, inexpensive option.
