When Sandy came to us she was faced with life in a wheelchair, we provided a new-generation, ultra-lightweight leg brace.  I'll let Sandy tell you her amazing story in her own words:

"My story begins with a fall that broke my back in 2004 that was not fixed for 9 months because it was not seen, not that I didn't have it checked.  After emergency surgery (spinal fusion) and not understanding what I was being told, I tried to go back to my life as it was.  Well I fell a lot, I was not able to walk, may leg turned in and my foot dropped.  The leg was getting weak and I had no feeling in it and pain, a lot of pain in my back.  I even asked the doctor if I had a stroke.  Things were going down hill fast.  I went to physical therapy and this company worked with me until they ran out of things to give me to do with no improvement.  That is when I heard that I would be needing a wheelchair.  I was devastated.  The nerves in my back had been damaged to the the point they would not and could not be repaired.  This means no more camping, no more job, no more hiking.  It was as if they were telling me my life was now changed forever.  In 2008 I fell again and decided that something needed to be done now.  And not a wheelchair.  My primary doctor sent me to a foot doctor to see if we could stop the drop foot that was happening.  This doctor said lets do something better, lets see about a brace and see if we can keep things going.  Well I had a surprise trip planned and was hoping to a have a brace before leaving.  AtlanticProCare did it and I traveled alone on a plane to surprise my son for his 30th birthday.  I walked into his home and we cried.  I was walking with crutches but walking.  I returned home to start physical therapy at Saco Bay, a different physical therapy company.  Once my primary therapist and everyone helped me walk and get the strength into my leg that I had lost in 3 years of not using the muscles,  I went hiking for the first time that summer and now a year and 3 months later, I not only walk without crutches but hike, swim, garden and am now blessed by taking care of my 4 month old grandson.  Thank you AtlanticProCare and Saco Bay, you gave me my life back and I will keep going.  What you have given me, no one can take.  Thank you and God bless you all."  Sandy Lachtara
