Developing Your Prosthesis
Because you are a unique individual your prosthesis (or artificial limb) will need to be created specifically for you. With access to a wide range of components, materials and techniques we will carefully design your prosthesis to suit your needs and your lifestyle.

If we have the opportunity to meet with you pre-operatively, we will answer your questions and help explain the process. Often the largest source of stress is the unknown. We understand this and we're happy to help.

At the surgeon's invitation we are available to be present during surgery at no additional cost to you. We can help incorporate our prosthetic design goals and the surgical techniques used with the result being a more successful overall course of treatment for you.

Following surgery there is typically a period of about 6 weeks where you may wear a special sock designed to shrink the residual limb. An initial prosthesis can't be developed until the post-operative swelling has subsided significantly and your incision is completely healed.

When your limb is ready we will create an initial "check" socket that allows us to test the fit of a socket on your limb. When we are comfortable that we have achieved an excellent fit we will develop a second "definitive fit" socket that will be used in your first complete prosthesis. This part of the process takes a week or two depending on how rapidly your limb is progressing.

At the first fit of the "definitive" socket you will be able to stand and practice walking with your new prosthesis in our gait lab. New sockets will be made as you change in shape and size.

If you're already wearing an artificial limb, we'll meet with you initially to talk about goals and expectations and how an improved design can enhance your life and get you back to a new level of health and activity.

Our Pledge To You:

» There are good prosthetic fits and bad prosthetic fits and we will not expect you to be satisfied with anything but the best fit possible.

» Through the application of the latest prosthetic principles, we will help you achieve a level of activity that exceeds your expectations.
