to Maine and if the solutions that you need don't exist, we'll create them for you." Voted "Best In Portland" 2008 |
The AtlanticPROtector introduced at Maine Medical Center September 24, 2009 Following the amputation of leg it is essential to protect the residuum (the stump) and to avoid allowing the knee to tighten into a flexed position from the weeks spent in a wheel chair. Some surgeons also favor immediately providing a simple prosthesis (artificial leg) to allow some weight bearing and transfers as it promotes acceptance for the patient and improves healing, this is called an IPOP or Immediate Post Operative Prosthesis. To provide protection for their patient, typically the doctor must order a custom-made shell for the leg that includes a soft foam interface and a more rigid plastic exterior. These devices are expensive, take time to make and because the patient's leg is changing size so rapidly as healing progresses, they fit poorly within days of being provided. If an immediate post-op prosthesis is indicated, this requires a different type of shell that is fabricated to accept a pylon (pipe) and foot so that it can be used for standing and transfers.
