Our Amputee Support Group is an independent organization sponsored by AtlanticProCare. The group's charter allows for totally autonomous operation and membership is open to the public whether an individual is a patient of AtlanticProCare or not. The group meets each month in the informal setting of the Public Resource Center at AtlanticProCare located on the 3rd floor at 1274 Congress Street, Portland, Maine. The 3rd floor is handicap accesible and is served by an elevator from the lobby. The group's leader is Rhonda Butterfield, an amputee herself, who has a tremendous amount of experience working with individuals who have gone through the experience of amputation. Each month the group meets to talk about topics of interest to amputees and to share with each other the ups and downs of their experiences. Many people come with the thought of helping others who have recently gone through amputation and come away finding that they too have learned new things and made new friends. If a support group doesn't seem like your kind of thing you might enjoy speaking to her just to talk about your experiences one on one. Many members of the group started out feeling like the "group thing" wasn't for them and have since found themselves both enjoying it and really benefiting the other members. Currently there are plans in the works to develop real time access to these meetings for members who are currently house bound. This would be done using a secure video link up over the Internet.
